Awards Season: What's the best of the year?

Sat Jan 12, 2008 at 09:27:32 AM PDT

CAMPAIGN BREAK!

So the Academy Awards nominations will be out in about 10 days, and nomination polls are closing today.

What do you think will get nominated? What's the best of the year? What's overrated?

I've seen a lot of the Oscar bait movies this year and some I've liked and some I haven't.... My faves are Charlie Wilson's War, Eastern Promises, Michael Clayton and The Kite Runner. I'm going to see Juno today.

I thought Daniel Day Lewis was GREAT in There Will Be Blood, but otherwise the film was overrated and slow. It never built the way I thought it would.

Sweeney Todd.....is a musical... Like, ALL of it. They're singing the whole time!... Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.... disappointing. I was looking forward to that one. I'm afraid I can rarely bear a movie musical, although I do like them on stage....where they belong. Chicago was the only movie musical I liked because it motivated the singing really well. I'm afraid I can't bear to watch Sweeney Todd....

Couldn't really bear No Country for Old Men..... Didn't see what the point of the main character was and everybody else was pointless as well, except for Tommy Lee Jones. WAY overrated...

Into The Wild was good. Glad Sean Penn didn't over-glamorize this little spoiled brat's story too much. He portrayed his struggle with his past very well and also relayed the pain he put the people who loved through as well. Emile Hirsch was great.

I was surprised by Eastern Promises. The first scene is INCREDIBLY gorey and I thought I couldn't watch it, but it turned out not to be that violent, and was a great story, with a GREAT performance by Viggo Mortensen. I HATED History of Violence, but this one was great. Same director, same actor.

LLLLOVED Michael Clayton. Very satisfying movie, kept me guessing. Interesting story. And you know, George Clooney...

Atonement
Meh... Can't bear to watch Keira Knightley pouting in evening gowns and nurses uniforms.   It was pretty good, but I didn't love it.

The Great Debaters
I love me my Denzel, but it was a predictable teacher/student movie. Well done, but predictable.  Gee, who is gonna win the debate??? I don't know!!!!

American Gangster - GREAT epic, but a bit slower than I thought. Denzel and Russell were fantastic. Really beautifully done.

Charlie Wilson's War - I LOVED this movie, but I don't know if it will get the nods. I think at least Aaron Sorkin will win/get nominated for best screenplay. Gotta love Aaron Sorkin. I could be wrong, and I hope I'm wrong, but the mood doesn't seem to be for this film.

I REALLY liked the Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Beautifully made movie, great performances, fascinating script. Really well directed by Julian Schnabel. I think it's in the foreign film category, but will probably lose to Kite Runner. Kite Runner was great, though.

Here's who I think will get nominated for best actor:

Daniel Day Lewis, There will be Blood
Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises (DESERVES it)
George Clooney, Michael Clayton (good, but Oscar-worthy? Dunno. he's on a roll, though)
Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild
Tom Hanks, Charlie Wilson's War

Supporting actor
Casey Affleck for Jesse James (REALLY good job)
Tom Wilkinson, Michael Clayton
Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men (good, but I'll bet there were 10 other better roles this year that deserved it more, but the hype is in his favor)

Best Actress or Supporting Actress

I have no freakin' idea...Honestly, not a lot of great roles for women this year. Disappointing.  Oh wait:

Angelina Jolie as Marianne Pearl. She was GREAT in that role. Completely forgot she was Brad Pitt's wife not long into the movie.

If Keira Knightley gets nominated I'm gonna barf...

Best Picture:
Michael Clayton
Into the Wild (meh)
There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
American Gangster

Best Director
Coen Brothers (No Country)
Ridley Scott (American Gangster)
Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd)
Paul Thomas Anderson (There will be BLood)
Julian Schabel (Diving Bell)
